It's hard to imagine just how daunting the trip must have been in 1869, when John Wesley Powell first decided to attempt it. Back then, the canyon was utterly unexplored. It existed on maps only as a blank spot in the southwest. Powell was a geology professor from Illinois who had lost his right arm as an officer during the Civil War. Despite this handicap, he got together nine men, mostly his own friends and relatives, and transported four wooden boats to Green River in Wyoming. Waving goodbye to a few well-wishers by the riverbank, they set off to face 1,000 miles of unknown river. The challenge was extreme. The intrepid group had to learn how to ride the rapids as they went, with their clumsy boats regularly overturning. They subsisted on a diet of dry biscuits for much of the time. Three men became so discouraged they decided to hike out through the desert. They were never heard from again, and are presumed killed by Indians. But Powell and the others would emerge unscathed at the southern end of the Grand Canyon, three months after their trip had begun. Powell became a national celebrity, as famous in the United States as Neil Armstrong would become after walking on the moon – a feat that occurred, coincidentally, exactly a century later.

The history of Globus tours goes back to 1928, when an enterprising young man had a great idea. Antonio Montegazza lived on the shore of Lake Lugano in Switzerland, a popular travel destination. Seeing the visitors going out on the water every day, Antonio decided to offer rowboat rides on the lake, complete with stories about the local area. He got the rowboat on credit, started his business and the idea caught on. Soon Antonio had to buy more rowboats and hire some of his friends to pilot them. Eventually he went to motorized boats and then he expanded his company to land travel.

In time Globus acquired a motorcoach, marking the beginning of motorized land touring. The Globus motor fleet grew to 12 coaches in the 1930's and operated tours all over Switzerland. World War II only caused a temporary halt, and when it was over Antonio purchased two other coach companies.

Today Globus Journeys is a worldwide company carrying many thousands of passengers to destinations all over the world. With Globus, travelers can enjoy vacationing with a group of at least 30 other people under the guidance of a tour guide and an experienced motorcoach driver.

In Africa travelers can tour the great parks of Kenya, see the savannah of Tanzania or the majesty of Victoria Falls in South Africa. Globus Journeys operates a series of faith-based tours of Israel, Jordan and Egypt. Those who are looking for a real safari experience can also find it at Globus tours, which operates tours encompassing several nature preserves in Kenya and Tanzania.

The European vacations that provided the start for the company are still among its most popular tours. Globus tours goes to Italy, the British Isles and many other ports in all areas of Europe, including multi-nation tours, quick trips and theme journeys such as river cruises. As in Africa, there are faith-based tours hitting the great religious centers of Europe.

Globus can introduce travelers to Asia with their tours to China, Japan, Thailand and other lands.

Well, you think you know everything about an event, and then you learn even more (or worse yet, that you’ve been giving incorrect information!) Please see some specifics below about Oberammergau shared with us by our friends at Globus Tours.

One error was assuming the dinner break included dinner at the show. Not the case, dinner during the show is included with Globus Oberammergau tours, but guests will enjoy their meal back at the hotel.

	More interesting facts:

	1. Can you take pictures? Yes, but absolutely no flash

	2. Headphone translation? : There is none provided. The play is in German and a written outline is provided in English. The Passion Play story is obviously well known so your client will be able to easily follow along.

	3. Meals: All meals (B, L, D) are provided by the hotel in Oberammergau for Globus clients: the Hotel Boeld. The Boeld is dedicated to Globus clients during the play. The hotel is a 10 minute walk from the theatre and not in the crush right in the middle of town which is an advantage.

	4. The actors and play: there are 21 major roles, the roles are double cast with no preference for the actor (i.e. understudy etc). They have to have lived in Oberammergau for 20 years to participate.

	5. How many people from the USA?: 150,000 or about 30% of all travelers. Oberammergau does not expect a big downturn in attendance and still predicts a 100% sellout. English is spoken in the city of Oberammergau.

	6. The play: Starts at 2:30 pm, break at 5 pm. The break is 3 hrs. Play ends at 10.30 pm. They did this so the crucifixion is at night and is very dramatic.

	7. The theatre: the spectators will not get wet or rained on because the theatre is covered. The actors will if it did rain as they are not covered. Bring a sweater or blanket it can get cold. Oberammergau is 800 meters in altitude and in the Alps. There are lots of bathrooms at the play. The sets are handicapped accessible. It could snow in the later performances in Sept. The theatre holds exactly 4,720 people. We have some of the best seating arrangements. There is also an Oberammergau Museum at the Passion Play complex. It's an included feature with the ticket.

	8. Staying outside of Oberammergau and the Globus advantage: Any tour operator not staying in Oberammergau itself is most likely approximately 20-25 kms from Oberammergau. It cannot be emphasized enough the huge advantage we have of staying in the town of Oberammergau. Other tour operators and their clients are living out of a bus. Who wants to take a bus home at 10:30 at night 25 kms away after the play? We will also have an operating office in Oberammergau.

The site's historic ruins indicate that the ancient collapse of this once dominant city was violent, resulting in a major shift of the region's political power. Meticulous preservation of the site's temples, palaces, stages, markets and ballcourts continue to attract an influx of interest from around the world.

Europe’s most famous cathedral, whose twin Gothic towers loom above France’s most beloved river, the Seine, actually owes a lot of its international success to the author Victor Hugo. Back in 1831, when Hugo wrote his classic novel about a hunchbacked bell-ringer at Notre Dame who falls in love with a beautiful gypsy, the medieval cathedral had fallen on hard times. During the Revolution in 1789, it had been seized, looted of its treasures and converted into an atheistic “Temple of Reason.” Even worse, after the monarchy was restored in 1815, Notre Dame was used as riverside warehouse – its once-splendid glass windows now dimmed and its facades decaying pathetically above the Île de la Cité. But Parisian’s indifference to their landmark ended suddenly in 1831, when Victor Hugo published his romantic novel the “Hunchback of Notre Dame,” (called “Notre-Dame de Paris” in French). The book was an international bestseller and lured armies of tourists to Paris in search of its Gothic cathedral setting. Hugo used this groundswell of public interest to lobby the French government for renovations of his beloved Notre Dame. From 1845 to 1864, repairs were indeed carried out – the clogged medieval streets nearby were cleared, revealing the marvelous edifice we see today.
